The main reason due to which Claudius is pumping Laertes to seek revenge is Claudius’ personal interest and not because Hamlet has taken the life of the father of Laertes. This even shows that when an individual is dedicated towards seeking revenge, he fails to take rationale decisions and decisions under the light of ethics and morality. The story even informs the readers that once characters and individuals decide to seek revenge, they continue to destroy the path of ethical and moral behavior. For example: In the literature, Hamlet clearly shows that once the announcement and the decision of seeking revenge are taken, the desire to conduct the act increases. For example: In Act 2, Scene 2 of Hamlet, Hamlet promises on his father’s dead soul that he wants to murder Claudius to attain revenge and he is being pumped by revenge to conduct this act as soon as possible (Shakespeare, 2008). The text even reveals that Hamlet is conducting changes to his mentality for the sake o f attaining revenge; this even reflects the determination within Hamlet to seek revenge. The literature even shows that the desire to attain revenge has diverted him from his ability to think in a moral manner and the literature even reveals that the desire to seek revenge is caused due to ones pride (Anderson 41). The literature even informs its reader that pride is the front seat driver of the behavior to seek revenge and those individuals who are proud are strongly motivated to seek vengeance. The text states that pride precedes moral reasoning and incentives attained from seeking revenge are far greater than the benefits that might be attained through moral reasoning and moral behavior. The text even shows that individuals give greater importance to honor rather than moral reasoning while taking any action. For example: the text states that Fortinbras has to seek revenge from Hamlet because Hamlet killed his father and took over his father’s property and in order to regai n the honor of the family and the property, he has to murder Hamlet and take back the property from Hamlet. The quality audit undoubtedly began with customer inspection. These have been typically intended to : To prove technical capability of the establishment the product or service To check that establishment have capacity or not to cope the customer demand To confirm the commercial stability of establishment. To form an opinion as to whether this is the type of establishment that we would like to do business with. 1.5 Why is it necessary? It is a management tool covering services, products, equipment and financial aspect of a property. Most guests have no time to give feedback, or give only negative comments on one aspect of their experience. It measures and ensures service standard consistency within a chain/group. It identifies staff training needs and rewards. It identifies cost cutting efficiencies. Used for long term benchmarking data. 2.0 Quality audit for Kohinoor continental How you conduct the quality audit? Presently I am not working in hospitality industry therefore I chose Kohinoor continental for my quality audit. As I completed my training from there, so its easy to me to do the quality audit of Kohinoor Continental. In Kohinoor I worked most in bar therefore I chose bar section. Name of the bar Baryl club No of covers- 44   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For quality audit purpose I have called to Bar manager and bar tender and asked several question regarding quality audit. 3.0 The gaps in Bar of Kohinoor Continental Lack of upselling The service personnel dont have any knowledge about upselling. Product out of stock- Sometime due negligence of steward, bar tender forgot to order the items which are low in stock. Therefore sometime we have to tell to our guest stock out of stock. No proper crowd management- Actually Baryl club offering heavy discount to there customer therefore there was very rush in the evening time. and its has only capacity of 40 cover at a time therefore crowd just roaming in the lobby and there is no one to handle that crowd from bar. Also there is no one for advanced booking. No proper storage area and very small pantry- In Baryl club pantry itself in the bar where we stored snacks (peanuts, wafers) some bottles of wine, beer, whisky etc. Also in pantry there is account department for bar section so its very congested to work. The pantry area is so small only two person can stand properly therefore its very difficult to work in peak hours. Less staff in bar- Although Baryl club has capacity for 40 covers only 2 peoples were there to serve them. Also there is no one to take the advanced bookings. Its difficult for staff to take the order and place the order and also take care the new guest. Also kitchen area is very far from bar section therefore if one bar personnel was busy to pick up the order from kitchen its very difficult for other to mange in the bar. I completed my training in bar therefore I observed these gaps during my training period. 4.0 Recommendation I am planning to fill the above gaps with PDSA model which is commonly used in hospitality industry. (Wiseman B. 2005) PLAN- it is the test how you are going to work. DO-how you are going to carry out the plan STUDY-look what are the result, what can you improve, what are your mistake. ACT- It is the designs time what are you going to do. 4.1 Recommendations on above gaps: Upselling- Recommendation for this to give your staff proper training for upselling. So they can also know what benefit of upselling is and also help them to earn some tips. Bar manager can also show some upselling practically so they can understand easily. Product out of stock-Recommendation for this is Bar manager have to keep eye on stock list so they can also order for stock without intimation of steward. Also Bar manager can check stock list in every 15 days so he is also aware about the stock in bar. Crowd management- Recommendation for this management H.R department have to hire a service personnel or public relation officer for bar so he/she can handle the crowd properly and also take the bookings on phone. Also management can keep separate area in lobby for those people who are waiting for table inn the bar. So they can wait in that area without disturbing front office staff. Storage area- Recommendation for this will be management can shift account department in the restaurant (where they already have account dept for restaurant) from bar and keep the that area fully utilised for bar purpose so that more stock can stacked properly and also no complaint about the lack of stock. After that during the billing we can give all KOTs to cashier in the restaurant and he can give us the proper bill and at the end of the shift we can handover the cash and all bills to cashier. Less staff in bar-Its very difficult to handle bar with only 2 staff therefore recommendation for this is management can recruit 1 or 2 more staff so its very easy to handle during the rush hours. 4.2 Action plan as per the recommendation and time spam Upselling-For upselling management can give proper training to food and beverage staff. The bar manager or the senior person can give proper training because of there experience. The training can held in the afternoon time when there is less rush or in the morning time when there is no guest in the bar. The manager have to show the upselling tactics practically so that they can understand it very easily and the will also try do upsellings. The training is for only once or twice in a week for a month. The one month period is enough to learn the upselling. Product of out of stock- Actually this is bar tenders duty to keep eye on the stock list. But due to negligence of bar tender some time products are of of stock. The solution for this is bar manager can check the stock list once in a fifteen days and he can also give the intimation to bartender about the stock. Another plan is they can save the stock list in computer and check the stock whenever the want and order as per the convenient. Crowd management-To fill this gap the H.R department have to appoint a public relation officer (P.R) for bar who can take the advance booking for bar and also control the crowd during the rush hours in bar. To appoint the P.R 15-20 days are enough after giving advertisement in newspaper or in job searching site. The P.R will also help in the bar to fill the tent cards asking the guest about the service and other things also like quality of food etc. Storage area- To fulfil this gap management have to shift the account dept of bar in the restaurant where they will see the accounts of restaurant as well as bar. The restaurant already have accounts therefore it doesnt take time for shifting purpose. But it will take 1 week to settle down there. After that in bar management have to make some storage shelves and proper area to stack the all items therefore this also take 1week time. Less staff in bar- For this gap H.R department have to recruit a steward or one more bar tender who will help service personnel from the bar. This will also take 15-20 days to recruit. One more option for H.R is they can hire the steward on temporary basis during the rush hours of the bar instead of hiring a permanent staff. For example they can hire a student form a hotel management college to work in the evening time. so it will save the cost as compare to hiring the a permanent staff. 4.3 Cost factor Upselling- As bar manager is giving the training during his duty hours so it doesnt cost to organisation. Product out of stock- This is covered in duty activity therefore this also doesnt cost anything. Crowd management- This will cost for organisation to pay the P.R staff. Work Reform Essay -- Business Management

Work reform, as interpreted by the employer, is a modern concept that has at its core increases in efficiency and effectiveness and a content and stable workforce. Work reforms are a means to an end; the end being increases in efficiency, production, and profits in a volatile global market. Depending on which method is used, the goals are to motivate their workers to gain their compliance. By paying more attention to a workers values, attitudes, and psychological needs, etc. a company can set the foundation for a more militant workforce and perhaps circumvent unionization. A company can try to create a â€Å"corporate family†, for example, via a corporate culture to try to facilitate this type of reform. The implementation of a corporate culture is an attempt to get workers to â€Å"buy in† to the firm’s overall goals (Krahn, Lowe, Hughes, 2011 p. 244-248). Key themes include workers as human beings, organizational cultures, constant adaptation, co-operatio n, creativity, flexibility, work teams, doing more with less, continuous learning, flatter organizational structures, customer-service, and participative management, etc. The goals and motivations for work reform as it pertains to a workforce differ from those of firms. Workers see changes such as enhanced on the job decision-making, increased autonomy, a decrease in monotonous and arduous tasks, and more input into large company decisions(that will ultimately affect them) as positive. Other changes that workers would embrace are pay increases and the addition of family friendly work policies such as more free time, and on-site daycare. Since a number of large manufacturing and service firms are unionized, a motivation and goal for work reform, in this respect, would be for a co... ...enough research on it. Some drawbacks are less employment security, a loss of pay due to the profit-sharing model, and there is evidence of some firms engaging in downsizing and layoffs who have adopted HPW. There is also evidence that implementation of HPW systems in lower-tier service jobs results in negligible differences in any of the above categories. Only in the upper-tier services can more of the benefits of this model be had, which unfortunately leads to potentially greater market segmentation (Krahn, Lowe, Hughes, 2011 p. 267-268). Ethics in the Classroom Essay

Assessments have been in existences for many years; however schools have implemented various technology programs due to changes which have occurred in the educational system. Technology has become an innovative way to document, record, and to expand student’s learning. Teachers have access to software and hardware which is used to teach students required information as well as prepare them for the world outside the confines of a classroom. This plan will explain how software is used to support assessment in the classroom, such as formative and summative assessment and how technology may be used to support these two assessments. The plan will take a glimpse into the pros and cons of using technology and the teachers’ use of technology in the classroom. Although this plan is not intended to be a required plan for any teacher, it offers a suggestive approach to the use of technology based assessment in the school system. Teachers use assessments throughout their teaching careers to help evaluate a student’s learning process. Assessments also help to gather information for others to view such as; information pertaining to the schools in their school district, the students serviced (demographics) and test results. In a recent article online, Formative and Summative Assessments in the Classroom, Ehringhaus &Garrison state â€Å"Assessment is a huge topic that encompasses everything from statewide accountability tests to district benchmarks or interim test to everyday classroom tests† (2012, p2). The two types of assessments teachers used are formative and summative, which â€Å"being creative with formative and summative assessment can seem a daunting task, but technology can assist with this and give students accessible ways to widen both ideas about assessment and kinds of assessments that students took†(Senate Office on Assessment, 2012,p1). Formative assessment is used to gather information that can be used to improve the teaching and learning of students. The main difference amongst formative and summative assessment would be how the information would be used. â€Å"When it comes to improving instruction and learning, it’s not the quantity of the data that counts, but how information is used† (Harris, Lewis, Muoneke & Times, 2010, p. 1). Although formative assessments can be done daily, weekly, or when needed, the information may be used to create a lesson plan which meets the needs of the students in his/her classroom. The summative assessments are done at the end of a course or semester; however they may contain other information such as age, race or gender and may cover general information taught over the course of a school year. The use of assessments in technology can also be challenging for some teachers and students. Therefore, educators should compare the pros and cons of using technology in the classroom and assessment of students. Technology has increased in the classroom, and with the change in technology there is a change in the way assessments are done. Usage of technology to help assess students can benefit in many ways, it can enhance the learning process of students by â€Å"help(ing) students visualize problems they may encounter and reach students with different learning styles, including visual, auditory, and experiential learners† (Teaching with Technology, 2012, pg. 3). On the other spectrum of technology it can be costly to school district depending if the schools request wired or wireless hardware. Regardless of the use of technology in the classroom or for assessments, teachers must assess their students to help understand and implement the needs of the students. Also to help parents stay informed about their child’s learning process; parent sites are also available to view their student’s grades and testing scores. Assessments can help to oversee the progression of students, and incorporating the use of technology to help with assessment can help to relieve the stress of keeping up with many forms and paperwork, but over usage can become mundane for students. However, â€Å"as good as technology-based assessment and data systems might be, educators need support in learning how to use them. (U. S. Department of Education, 2012, p1). Information on proper use of technology should be administered to teachers before they can teach the information to their students. The introduction of hardware such as Promethean boards allows the professional development department to develop courses which have become a requirement of the teachers’ certification process. This ensures teachers have received instruction on how to implement te chnology in the classroom and the use of software to support assessment. Teachers should not rely solely on the use of technology as a form of assessment due to inaccuracy of data information. Sometimes human errors may cause problems with a students? grades or information. Over usage of technology can also obscure the information with students who may learn in a different manner. Technology can help assess students using formative and summative assessments, which can increase the learning process of students by continuing ongoing assessments to help facilitate the learning process.

The black and decker corporation: power tools division| The Case of Black and Decker| The Marketing Plan for The Professional Tradesmen Segment Year 1991/1992| | Executive Summary Gary DiCamillo, Black and Decker’s president of power tools for United States, is reviewing the most recent sales records and figures indicating the professional tradesmen segment’s market share in his office. The research findings are not looking good and surprisingly, he didn’t expect otherwise. It has been almost a decade that this segment is in the bottom half of brand perception.There has not been any more vital time to understand the cause of this setback. This urgency lead him to ask Joseph Galli, the vice president of sales and marketing at Black and Decker, to conduct a thorough research to develop a marketing plan for the year 1991/1992. The new plan is developed to target the major problem in the Professional Tradesmen segment: Low market share among comparatives and no profi tability. After a detailed situation and consumer analysis and evaluating the alternatives, John Galli concluded that professional tradesmen segment needs to be repositioned.After a careful product assessment, Galli realized the professional quality of items produced by B&D is above their major comparatives such as Makita and Milwakee. However, the brand is poorly differentiated from the lower grade products in the consumer segment; the segment which B&D holds the most solid market share among comparatives. They needed to strategically enter this market while emphasizing their position in Home Center and Two-Step distribution channel.Following these realities, Galli knew with almost no profitability in this segment asking for advertising allowances and rebate money is not an option. As a result, he introduced a marketing plan revolving around repositioning the professional tradesmen segment and establishing a new brand entry, backed by B&D service and warranty handling and differentiating products from consumer segment by colorization. 1 Introduction Black and Decker is one of the world’s largest power tool manufactures and the leader of power tool market in United States.In 1991, Black and Decker’s sales record was over $5 billion and the company ranked 7th in brand recognition throughout U. S and 19th in Europe market. The nation’s power tool company leader divides in three segments: consumer, professional industrial and professional tradesmen. The consumer tool segment is offering products for â€Å"at home† use and is the most popular division with proximately $250 million in revenue in 1990. The professional industrial targets the corporates that purchase tools in large quantities for the use of professional employees.The revenue for this segment is estimated $110 Million as well. The professional tradesmen segment is the $420 million size division which represents products that professional individuals such as carpenters and contractors purchase to use on the job sites where they are required to take their own tools. However, this segment generated only $35 million revenue in 1990 with almost no profit. Both consumer and professional industrial segments owned a solid position in the market with 45% and 20% segment shares in power tool market. However, this success did not transfer to the professional tradesmen segment.In 1990, B&D roughly held 9% market share in power tool market in United States. This highlighted the presence of the competitors such as Makita and Milwaukee with 50% and 10% market shares to the senior management of B&D more than ever. Although Black & Decker only holds a 9% share in the current professional tradesman segment, Black & Decker holds the title of being one of the best producers of high quality goods. By repositioning the DeWalt name in the rapidly growing professional tradesmen segment, that 9% market share will quickly increase with the support of our brand recognition and image.With the strong internal factors, the Black & Decker Company has strong potential in building an admirable image in the $420 million professional tradesmen segment. External Factors The professional tradesmen segment, although relatively new, has rapidly been growing compared to the consumer, 7%, and industrial, no growth, segments. Consumer Analysis Black & Decker Corporation as a Power Tools Division has been ranked low in the professional tradesmen market. In efforts to increase awareness and market the power tools division in a more competitive way, a consumer study was established and processed.Consumers of different ages, sexes, and races that work in the professional tradesmen field and the general public were asked a series of non-bias questions in order to gain a competitive advantage in the future sales opportunity. In order to do so we needed to study the current trend of consumer awareness and behavior as well as the pre conceived opinion of the Black & Decker product reputation both past and current trends. The following segments were used: Young Adults (ages 15-25), Adult Women (ages 26-60), and Adult Men ages (26-60).Young Adults (ages 15-25): The young adults being mostly single, college age living at ho me with parents or with roommates who typically don’t use power tools were vaguely familiar with the Black & Decker name and not associating as a Power tool brand. Adult Women (ages 26-60) usually homemakers, single moms, have advanced education, professional, and work both outside the home as well as in the home. Of the Adult females surveyed 75% were familiar with the Black & Decker name and had purchased a B&D power tool over any other brand.Of those women, 75% also choose durability over cost when compared to similar items. While most women appear to be more in tune to actual cost of household products such as a Dust Buster when compared to professional grade tools, they still have a more realistic estimate of actual cost when compared side by side. Most women rate 4 Black & Decker as a good-excellent power tool product and would recommend to a friend and purchase additional B&D products. Adult Men (ages 26-60) Most with a higher level of education and with more experienc e using power tools.In some instances adult men and women shared the same opinion but when asked, men choose warranty over compatibility. 56% of adult men rated Black & Decker as a poor choice for a power tool. While women were found to be more willing to purchase additional power tools with the Black & Decker name only 10% of males said they would and most would not recommend B&D as a power tool option. With the above data collected it is determined that dropping the Black & Decker name instead of just Sub branding would better benefit the goals of the company and gain a larger advantage in the market.Having such a negative appeal from the current state is not only discouraging but also provides a more complete analysis of how the consumers view the Black & Decker name, regardless of the quality of an actual item. Alternatives, Pros and Cons The first alternative would focus on B&D consumer and Professional-Industrial market segment which it already maintains the #1 market share. T he professional-Tradesman segment would become an afterthought for B&D, instead focusing primarily on profitability at the expense of market share.B&D research had shown that their tools were highly regarded in the professional industrial segment, for high quality. B&D field test of their products with all identifying marks removed against competitors products which also had all identifying marks removed, showed that product quality was strongly competitive with other brands. This would greatly diminish the Black and Decker brand by deemphasizing the quality in the professional-Tradesman segment. The result would be a negative effect on consumer and industrial segments as well.Brand loyalty and image would suffer greatly while gaining market share for the Professional-Tradesman segment. The second alternative would be to sub-brand B&D product. The brand would have a new name for its professional tradesman products, but would also state â€Å"by Black and Decker†. 5 This alter native would not entirely clear all negative brand perception in the B&D Professional Tradesman segment. Professional Tradesman segment viewed the B&D brand as a product for home instead of job use.This alternative would still carry the negative perception of the B&D brand in the Professional Tradesman segment of the market. B&D quality perception of suppliers quality would remain first to last based on company research. Color was generally regarded as a product differentiator and this alternative would not make any changes in this regard, keeping the B&D tools their respective traditional colors. This alternative would do little to increase market share and revenue.The third alternative, which has been chosen for the best possible outcome, would be to use an entirely different brand name for the B&D Professional-Tradesman segment of the market. The brand name chosen is DeWalt, the brand has storied history in the stationary wood working business since the company was founded in 191 8. The color yellow chosen for the product would create instant awareness of the brand amongst its immediate competitors Makita and Milwakee. The price of the DeWalt Professional-Tradesman product would be positioned comparably to the Makita and Milwakee brands.Milwakee and Makita are priced 5% and 10% respectively over current similar B&D products. 6 The distribution channels that will be used include home centers, which include The Home Depot and Home Club. The yellow color of DeWalt tools will help it differentiate itself form other products and also promote itself as being the only yellow tool for Professional-Tradesman on the market.Conclusion The purpose to conduct this marketing plan was to find an alternative to Black and Decker’s decade long failure to own large enough market shares in professional tradesmen segment. Black & Decker has succeeded to position the consumer and professional industrial segments in the top ranked market share among comparatives however, professional tradesmen segment has failed to reach anywhere beyond %9. The internal factor for B&D is that, this company is one of the world†™s largest power tool producers and in the comparison product analysis Black and Decker’s products win over the competitors.This means B&D has the potential to earn the top brand perception that is missing. All sanity depends on this: that it should be a delight to feel heat strike the skin, a delight to stand upright, knowing the bones are moving easily under the flesh. I have found it to be true that the older Ive become the better my life has become. The great secret that all old people share is that you really havent changed in seventy or eighty years. Your body changes, but you dont change at all. And that, of course, causes great confusion. And then, not expecting it, you become middle-aged and anonymous. No one notices you. You achieve a wonderful freedom. For the last third of life there remains only work. It alone is always stimulating, rejuvenating, exciting and satisfying. Bed is the best place for reading, thinking, or doing nothing. Borrowing is not much better than begging; just as lending with interest is not much better than stealing. Seventy-one girls are raped. Nineteen are trampled to death in the stampede to escape. The schools vice principal remarks, The boys never meant any harm against the girls. They just wanted to rape. United States: A 51-year-old woman is stabbed 19 times and killed by her former boyfriend as she waits inside a courthouse to extend an order of protection. Brainstorming Techniques for Students Brainstorming is a method students can use to generate ideas for writing a paper. In the process of brainstorming, you should suspend any concerns about staying organized. The goal is to pour your thoughts onto paper without worrying about whether they make sense or how they fit together. Because students have different learning styles, some students will be uncomfortable with the disorganized frenzy of spilling thoughts onto paper. For instance, left brain  dominant  students and sequential thinking students may not benefit from the process if it becomes too cluttered. There are more organized ways to brainstorm, however. For this reason, we’ll explore a few ways to get the same results. Find the one that feels most comfortable to you. Brainstorming for Right Brains Right-brained thinkers are typically comfortable with a variety of shapes, ideas, and patterns. Right brains dont run from chaos. The artistic side of the right brain enjoys the process of creatingand it doesnt really matter whether they start with cluttered ideas or clumps of clay. The right brain may be most comfortable with clustering or mind mapping as a brainstorming method. To get started, you will need a few clean pieces of paper, some tape, and a few colored pens or highlighters. Write your main idea or topic in the middle of the paper.Start writing down thoughts in no particular pattern. Write words or passages that pertain to your main idea in some way.Once youve exhausted the random thoughts that come into your head, start using prompters like who, what, where, when, and why. Do any of these prompters generate more words and ideas?Consider whether prompters like opposites or comparisons would be relevant to your topic.Dont worry about repeating yourself. Just keep writing!If your paper gets full, use the second sheet. Tape it to the edge of your original paper.Keep attaching pages as necessary.Once you have emptied your brain, take a short break from your work.When you return with a fresh and rested the mind, glance over your work to see what kinds of patterns emerge.Youll notice that some thoughts are related to others and some thoughts are repeated. What is symbolic play? Symbolic play is, according to Piaget (1962) one of the main ways in which children learn to think in a representational manner, where representation is understood as a process through which children store information according to the perceptual analysis of their ingoing experiences (Leslie, 1987; Lyytinen et al., 1997). Play essentially allows children to understand the things they experience and to put these things in to perspective. As such, play is fundamentally important for childrens development (Piaget, 1962). Play is one of the ways in which children understand the world, their interactions with others and the rules and regulations that govern their passage through the world. Play is, thus, a fundamental activity for children that allows them to form their personalities and to understand their place in the world, in relation to others. Relevant of symbolic play in child development Symbolic play, which arises around the age of 18 months, basically involves children substituting one item for another, and can constitute incorporating others in to their play, pretend play or sequencing. This can mean that children pretend to be mother (or father) or that they use household items to reproduce day-to-day activities they have seen their parents doing, amongst other common symbolic play activities. This symbolic allows children to experiment with different roles and different forms of being, which, as has been discussed, allows children to understand, and to contextualise, their experiences. As Piaget (1962) argues, such symbolic play allows children to understand the role of self and others, the use of objects and the sequences of actions and activities whilst playing. This allows children to understand objects, to learn about the properties of objects and to learn about consequences and causality (Piaget, 1962). Play thus allows children, amongst other things, to re alize where their boundaries are, to understand why things work in the ways they do and to understand how to interact with others. Symbolic play is thus, as has been discussed, a fundamental developmental tool for children. Watson and Zlotlow (1999) talk about symbolic play as, an important characteristic of childrens early play, through the enactment of activities that are very familiar to the child in contexts that are not typical for those activities. Enacting activities out of context allows the child to explore, and to understand, the role of agents in their lives, allowing them to understand how the world works and what their role is in this world. Symbolic play, therefore, has been argued to have three main features: the use of objects; the use of actions during the play; and individuals enacting the play (i.e., agents) (Watson and Zlotlow, 1999). The use of objects can be undertaken in many forms, either through substitution, in which the object is used to represent something else, through scenario-building, with the object being used to perform some task or in combination, with the object being used in various ways (Watson, 2008). The use of actions in play and the development of the agent in p lay follow certain patterns depending on the age of the child, as does the theme of childrens symbolic play (Watson, 2008). The one thing that all symbolic play has in common, at whatever age or developmental stage the child is at, is that the child uses some representation of self in their play. At age four, for example, children will have progressed to fantasy play, but these fantasies will usually involve themselves in becoming their fantasy a fireman or a prince, for example (Garvey, 1990). This allows them to explore different roles and responsibilities. Symbolic play is, therefore, a natural phenomena, that children follow naturally, as part of their development through childhood. As Reed (2007) argues, symbolic play links all four areas of a childs development, namely cognitive, language, social/emotional and physical, and, as such, is a fundamental part of the development of children. Symbolic play allows the child to acquire knowledge and to express and represent their ideas, thoughts and feelings: as Vygotsky argues, in his sociocultural cognitive theory, symbolic play allows children to develop and to self-regulate and to work out any problems they might face (Reed, 2007). It is in this aspect, then, that the therapeutic value of symbolic play becomes clear. As children constantly experiment with their environment, their peers and the other agents they meet, and as the results of these experiments are constantly being fed back to lead to reinforce certain behaviours or to elicit different patterns of behaviours, the value of pl ay as therapy is clear. Children who are passing through a difficult moment and who need help to understand this, to contextualise these difficulties in the framework of their existing knowledge, can, through engaging in therapeutic play, manage this. Therapeutic play allows them to experiment with the various outcomes and to contextualise the problems they face, allowing them an opportunity to work through these problems/problematic situations, through this working out their difficulties and coming to understand how to deal with them. The use of symbolic play as therapy In terms of the use of symbolic play as therapy with children, as Bettelheim states, Play permits the child to resolve in symbolic form unresolved problems of the past and to cope directly or symbolically with present concerns. It is also his most significant tool for preparing himself for the future and its tasks (Schaefer, 1995). Using play as a tool to help children through a difficult stage in their lives is, therefore, grounded in theory and makes sense in light of the fact that children learn through play. The research shows, for example, that therapeutic play can be helpful in aiding children through hospital stays (William, 2007) or through surgery, with this therapeutic play being shown to reduce anxiety and increase overall well-being (Bowmer, 2002). As Moore and Russ (2006) discuss, pretend play can act as a resource for children, relating, as it does, to many areas of adaptive functioning including creativity, coping and emotional regulation. As Moore and Russ (2006) show , pretend play in hospital settings can reduce anxiety and, through this, can reduce the likelihood of complications following surgery and can allow children to adapt better to the complications of chronic illness. The therapeutic value of symbolic play In terms of the therapeutic value of symbolic play, as Axline (1964) discusses, therapeutic play can be delivered through one of two major approaches, namely via non-directive play therapy and via directive play therapy (Oaklander, 1988). According to Axline (1964), play therapy should be governed by eight principles, namely that the therapist and child must be comfortable with each other; that the therapist accepts the child as he/she is; that the child can freely express their feelings; that the therapist is alert to the feelings the child expresses; that the therapist respects the child and their ability to resolve their own problems; that the therapist does not attempt to influence the child; that the therapy is carried out in its own time; and that the only limitations placed on the play therapy are those that anchor the therapy in the real world (Axline, 1964). If the therapeutic play is provided within this framework, the benefits of the therapeutic play can be many and varied , as discussed above, with the troubled child benefitting greatly from this intervention. As Li and Lopez (2008) argue, therapeutic play can be valuable not only in helping children through a difficult stage in their lives but can be useful in helping to in prepare children for a stressful, or difficult, period that they might face. For example, children who are facing surgery or a chronic illness can be helped to come to terms with this through the use of therapeutic play. As Li and Lopez (2008) report, by reinforcing to nursing and medical staff that play is a very important part of the lives of young children, and be employing therapeutic play techniques, this can markedly improve the anxiety that these children experience and can allow these children to have a more positive outlook regarding their situation and the difficult things they will face, meaning that they are better equipped to face these situations. As Li and Lopez (2008) argue, therapeutic play can help to improve the resilience of children who face difficulties and, as such, it is an important tool to use in those children who need help to become more resilient. Children who have faced some form of trauma, for example, can be aided through the fallout of this trauma through engaging in therapeutic play. By allowing the child the space to act out what they saw, or what they have experienced, for example, the child can come to terms with this traumatic experience. This therapeutic play could take the form of using puppets, or drawing, or role playing: anything that allows the child to re-enact the event(s) and, through this, come to terms with what happened. The use of therapeutic play in explaining the loss of someone close to them is known to be particularly valuable, for example, as this can allow them to imagine the person is still here and to resolve any outstanding issues they had with them, or to slowly come to terms with the fact that they are no longer alive and no longer able to be physically present with the child. The simple act of playing can, therefore, allow the child to come to terms with many difficult emotions, allowing the c hild to slowly become more able to cope with the negative emotions that a traumatic event (such as witnessing a violent act or the unexpected death of a close family member), allowing them to deal with these negative emotions (Schaefer and OConnor, 1994). As Schaefer and OConnor (1994) argue, role playing in particular can help children to face the negative post-trauma reactions that children might face, with role-play allowing children to relive the trauma and to find various solutions to their negative experiences and emotions. Conclusion In summary, then, this essay has looked at the issue of symbolic play being therapeutic play for children. The essay has looked, in particular, at the theory of symbolic play, the use of symbolic play with children and the therapeutic value of symbolic play. In regards to the theory of symbolic play, it has been seen that various theories have been proposed to explain the importance of symbolic play in childrens development, with all of these theories agreeing that play is a fundamental part of childrens development and that this play allows them to contextualise their experiences and to understand how these experiences dictate how they should act and should behave in different situations. It is this attribute of symbolic play that lends itself to being useful in helping children come to terms with difficult events in their lives: as has been discussed, play allows children to explore different scenarios (even difficult scenarios), with this play enabling them to overcome any negative emotions or feelings they might have had towards these scenarios. A child who is facing a difficult surgery, for example, might be scared, might be worried for themselves and for their families, but engaging in role play with this child (for example) allows them the opportunity to explore different possibilities and to release some of their anxieties and concerns. This has been shown, as discussed, to reduce the anxiety these children feel and to enable the childs health and well-being to be maintained, even under difficult circumstances. Similarly, a child who has experienced trauma can be helped through their post-traumatic period by engaging in some form of therapeutic play. This would normally consist of helping the child to act out their fears and their experiences, allowing the child to get rid of all of their negative emotions and feelings with regards to the even, allowing the child to expel these from their psyche and then to carry on without carrying this burden along with them. In conclusion, then, the essay has shown that play is fundamental for children and that, given its experimental nature and its ability to contextualise events and interactions for children, play is, at its very essence, therapeutic. Using play with children who need therapeutic interventions, then, makes perfect sense to allow children to understand the negative events/emotions and to overcome their fears and anxieties regarding these negative events and emotions. Therapeutic play has been shown to be a useful intervention in many cases, including in hospitalized children and in children living with chronic illnesses, who can be helped through this difficult period by engaging in therapeutic play, which has been shown to reduce their anxiety levels. In conclusion, then, therapeutic play is an extension of the symbolic play that children engage in as a normal developmental process and can be useful in helping children through difficult periods in their life.

Analysis of Bruce Springsteen's Song "Devils & Dust" In times of war it is quite common for people to start questioning their values and their actions and be unsure of the path they are taking. This is common because to protect our values we often are told that we have to take actions that conflict with those values. One example would be how to protect our liberties we must sometimes restrain those liberties during treacherous times. However, the ultimate question is whether or not going against the very values we stand for is a hypocritical and wrongful action plan. Bruce Springsteen approaches this very issue in his song â€Å"Devils & Dust†, from the CD with the same title, and he subtly criticizes how the United States is betraying its values. Springsteen wrote â€Å"Devils & Dust† during the Iraq War. He has been openly against the war and has been quoted saying to Rolling Stone, â€Å"As the saying goes, "The first casualty of war is truth." I felt that the Bush doctrine of pre-emption was dangerous foreign policy. I don't think it has made America safer.† The song itself could be interpreted as a soldier’s point of view about the war but overall it stands as a critique on our society betraying its own principles. The first couple of verses in the song already evoke the image of a soldier stuck in a war. â€Å"I got my finger on the trigger / But I don’t know who to trust† could be understood as a soldier’s experience in war but it could also have a deeper meaning. It could also signify that our society has to make these important choices that will end up affecting people’s lives but it is all too ambiguous, there just isn’t any certainty. We are left w ith the desperate feeling of not knowing what to do, not knowing wh... ...ty and privacy are essential for it. Also, I am a dual citizen and in my other country, which is Brazil, we are still somewhat haunted by the shadow of a dictatorship that just ended in 1987. So I know people who have suffered the consequences of lack of liberty. Even so sometimes I am doubtful of my opinion, even though I try not to express it often and defend liberty as much as I can. Whenever I see some terrible act, whether terrorist or governments do it, I think if there would be a way to stop that with restrictions on certain liberties and more surveillance.
